Miscellaneous Musings!

Just a few thoughts crossing my mind today:

Does it make you sad when TV stars from years past are advertising (usually) elder-care products on TV?  (Think Henry Winkler, who is telling us about all the benefits of a reverse mortgage.  Who would have ever thought Fonzie would be gray-haired and relying on commercials for income??)

Is it just me, or is this the first year that ‘Black Friday’ sales started weeks before the typical ‘Black Friday’ day?

Do you see signs that say “Don’t Veer For Deer” where you live?  I personally don’t know how else to do when a deer goes running in front of my car.  Am I supposed to just go straight and plow right into it?  I was driving home with pizza and bread sticks the other night when a deer jumped right in front of me.  Of course, I veered because it was just instinct.  Strangely enough, I also covered up the food so it did not spill everywhere too.  So, I saved a deer and dinner, without even giving it a second thought.  (I do recognize that ideally drivers should just hit the brakes and stay in control of the vehicle when a deer runs in front of the car to avoid careening in to other cars.  However, when it happened to me, I just did what I could to not hit the deer.  Maybe I need a driver/deer safety course?)

How do you react when you see someone obviously texting while driving? I don’t mean at a stop light, but I mean going 50 mph down a major road?  When I saw someone veering out of their lane last week, I looked over and saw a 20 something woman who was actively texting and steering at the same time.  I wanted to call the police, but I figured that she would be done by the time the police would catch up with her.  It is too bad we have no recourse against people out on the road that are putting themselves and us in danger with their distracted (or drunk) driving.

Why do dresses for nice occasions all seem to lack sleeves year-round?  I hate having to buy a supplemental sweater for whatever dress I wear to a wedding.  Just one more reason for me to despise clothes shopping.

What are your thoughts for today?

Talking is one thing, but texting while driving? Why don’t people use common sense atleast when it involves safety?

– Yes, seeing actors I watched with my parents 20 years ago doing elderly commercials makes me sad.
– Yes, Black Friday now seems to be Black November.
– We don’t have those Don’t Veer for Deer signs…we all veer or try to stop in time.
– I give texting drivers my meanest stare if I am a passenger. I like send mind vibes that they are stupid and hope they pick up on it. If I am driving, I honk and gesticulate to make it obvious that they are morons and I am pissed.
– I have a black wrap and a multicolored blue wrap and between the two, I have something that goes well with all of my nicer outfits.

I try not to think about those things because it disracts me from what I should be doing! 🙂 I used to get upset when people do stupid things such as talking on a cell phone when driving, talking to someone hands free in an elevator or talking loud on the phone in public. Now I tune it out because it is not worth any of my energy. It just distracts me from what I should do.

Black Friday / Christmas in general seemed to come too early this year. I saw Christmas decorations out before Halloween!
I’m just excited for a short work week and a great weekend of skiing ahead.

I haven’t seen the Henry Winkler ad, but I’ve been watching a lot of sports lately. The commercials during sporting events seem to be mostly full of good-looking youngish things, drinking beer, driving fast cars, and having fun. Except for the Geico caveman.

As for Black Friday coming earlier, I have to concede that a huge segment of the population loves the thrill of the hunt for a cheap TV and is all for ramping up the season. One of our radio stations started the all-Christmas format on Nov. 7, so there you go.

Outstanding job on throwing out the mom stiff arm to save the pizza AND avoid slamming into Bambi! So glad you avoided a collision. I just heard on the radio that deer are actually the most dangerous animal in the US – they cause more death, injury and property damage than any other animals, including dogs. Our warning signs just have the standard leaping deer. Someone added a red nose to the deer on one of the freeway signs that I often pass, and that always make me smile.

Actually, I don’t mind calling/texting on a straight stretch of highway as much as I hate when people are in the city and maneuvering around corners, out of parking lots, etc while on the phone. But what are the statistics these days on accidents that happen while people are using their cell phones? It might not be that much worse than eating, drinking, or dealing with an obstreperous child.

You’re right about the lack of sleeves in “nice occasion” dresses. I suspect it’s the fault of the good-looking young things in the aforementioned sporting event commercials! The women all have very toned arms…

It does make me sad when I see commercials like that. I just can’t get over the Jaime Lee Curtis yogurt commercials. Or the Alex Trebek life insurance commercials. So very, very sad.

The lack of sleeves drives me insane! I don’t want to show my arms to anyone in February. They are definitely pale and tragic.

As for Black Friday ads…I have a lot of (not so) pent-up rage about this. It is infuriating!

I don’t have the deer problem where I live, but I’d do the same- veer. As for those who text and drive, it drives me insane! Can’t people stay off their phones while driving? Or crossing the street? Or standing in line?! What the heck! Might as well just have that phone implanted into their ear!

The whole texting while driving is horrible. I do have a hands-free device for a reason (baby steps).

Sorry, I accidently submitted before I was finished.

Anyway, it is very good for us to be as aware of our surroundings and road conditions while driving as possible.

Texting while driving is far more dangerous than the many people seem to realize. I mean, actually looking down at a phone means not looking at the road. How incredibly crazy is that! There are probably people tweeting and driving too, I’ll bet!

I saw Fred Thompson doing one of those reverse-mortgage ads. Say it ain’t so, Fred!

You obviously have never run into a deer! They usually leap out right in front of you (from somewhere out of sight) which allows almost no time to react. This usually causes frantic swerving which could lead to losing full control of the vehicle, a rollover, hitting telephone poles, buildings, and worst of all, other vehicles or persons.

I haven’t seen those Don’t Veer For Deer signs, but just the regular deer crossing signs along many highways in Northern Wisconsin. The closest call I ever had was really late at night along a national forest highway, when a deer was suddenly standing in the middle of the road caught staring into my headlights, while at the same time, another vehicle was coming toward me from the opposite direction. I started flickering my headlights super fast to break it out of its trance and it leapt into the trees just in time to avoid being hit by both of our cars. So at night, if they’re standing in the road, I would say to start flickering your lights, as they seem to get caught in a trance by headlights. Now, when they just come jumping out of nowhere, you just have to do your best to avoid them or stop in time. I’ve been lucky not to have one jump in front of me, but have definitely had some close calls. The best idea is to drive pretty slow along highways where they are known to cross.
I don’t feel sad for past TV stars doing commercials. I mean, they act in commercials for a living, it’s not so bad, plus they at least have a job. Now if The Fonz was serving me fries with my Big Mac, I might be like, man, your agent couldn’t even get you a commercial gig.
Yeah, Black Friday seems to be a whole week nowadays, but what really gets me is since when did Christmas start the day after Halloween?
Texting and driving is probably worse than talking when driving, because you actually have to look at your phone. I guess if you were to call the police, you would then be talking while driving as well, so you’d have to pull over first, and then they’d be long gone. Oh well, I just try to steer clear of trouble.

Yes, I hate to see older versions of the stars I loved pitching for lawyer and diabetes treatments. It’s kind of depressing, but everyone has to make a living.
