I have decided to come up with a new category for my blog. It is called ‘Dumb Things People Do’. I will add a new ‘volume’ each time I write a post. As much as I hate to say it, I may end up with an infinite amount of posts. It may even become my largest category!
Anyways, here is the story:
I was out shopping and I saw a giant Doberman Pinscher riding in the front seat of a very small car. (Think Aveo hatchback or Volkswagon GTI). This dog was almost in the drivers lap, and his drooling mouth was right in the driver’s face. However, that isn’t the dumbest part. In the backseat of this tiny car was a child of about 3, a baby in a car seat, and a mom who had a toddler sitting on her lap.
I kept staring in disbelief. The Doberman got to ride in the front seat of the car, while four humans were crammed into a very tiny backseat, including an unbuckled child. What is wrong with this world? I am sure the mom in the backseat wanted to kill me because I kept staring at her and shaking my head. I wanted to perform a citizens arrest, but I didn’t want the dog to eat me. Where are the police when you need them?
I always get nervous when I see people driving with animals that are in the driver’s lap, or close to it. However, I am extra nervous when I see a bunch of kids in the backseat, especially in such a small car. I hope this was a one-time event, and not how they travel all the time.

I’m looking forward to this category! 🙂
Yeah, this definitely seems like it could be a very expansive set of posts. Even if you limited it to just stupid money decisions, you could easily fill several blogs.
This is a decidedly egregious example of human stupidity. I can only hope those kids have some good karma; with this sort of parenting, divine intervention might be the only way the kids make it to adulthood.
Good point Roger- these poor kids are probably getting daily lessons in stupidity.
Gosh, I could probably come up with a ton of stupid money decision posts- good point. (Even some about me!)
This should be fun, reading about these experiences!
In this particular story, those people must know the laws and what they’re supposed to be doing. Apparently, they think they’re above the laws, or think they can just get away with doing whatever they want. Or both.
Hopefully they’ll get stopped and ticketed soon, before anyone accidentally gets hurt, and also so they learn a lesson!
I just don’t get why you wouldn’t leave the dog at home? This dog was practically driving! A very clueless couple of adults in the car, that is for sure.
With you and Squirrelers’ Squirreling gone wild set, this promises to be a time for entertaining reading.
I just love the Squirreling series. His posts are more exciting than mine, mine will probably be more of a rant. That is why I love having a blog, I can say whatever I want!
Yeah, dummies. 🙂
This will be a great new add to your regular topics. Can’t wait for the next one.
I have been keeping my eye open for more volumes, but it was a slow day today…
Not buckling up anyone is totally stupid, but mom was probably in the back to be with the kids (who by law have to be in the back seat). Benefit of the doubt…
Heather, I think it is against the law to hold a child on your lap in the backseat. If it isn’t against the law, it should be. (This was a toddler mind you.) I would think the third child would have been buckled in the backseat and mom could ride in the front. (Leave the dog at home.)
People never cease to amaze me…
Well, we know where that dog stands in priority to that lady…
I remember driving on the way to the mall and seeing a lady drive a car full of cigarette smoke! And sadly, there was a little boy in the back seat (maybe 5 or 6)…
I agree. I do hope it is a one time event and not the norm. Some people really need to get their priorities straight.
Without people doing dumb things, there wouldn’t be any Darwin Awards. 🙂
I watched four cars today on the turnpike, speeding along at 75 mph in pod formation, 2 in the slow lane, 2 in the fast lane, with the two tailgating about 2 feet away from the car in front. I stayed well back and cringed for a while until the lead car in the slow lane (!) speeded up a bit and the moving traffic jam cleared up.
101 – I cannot stand situations like that. All you can do is slow waaaay down and hope they exit!
Sounds like fertile ground to me.
This is going to be a fun series. At the top of my stupid list is when I see a driver texting while the vehicle is in motion! I understand texting a quick answer at a stoplight, but how can texting while driving be a good thing?!
BFS – I hope they were smoking while texting too, I like that. I cannot stand when I see texters while driving. What is so important for gosh sake?
I have seen so many people driving with their cell phone in one hand, clutching a cigarette in between the fingers of the other one, somehow driving with their thumb or something. It’s almost enough to make me start doubting evolution that somehow genes for that level of stupidity managed to survive this long…
I am sure some people think they have perfected ‘knee driving’. I have seen laptops on laps too. It is all ridiculous.
Isn’t against the law to not buckle up a toddler?
I am looking forward to this series. Other than texting my main complaints are with the motorcyclists lane splitting over the speed limit. I don’t think that is legal anywhere other than CA. What a stupid thing to do, I have no idea why it is legal.
Suba – what do you mean about the motorcycle lane splitting over the speedlimit? We don’t even have motorcycle lanes where I live, so I am extra confused.
Hi Kris,
I think this category has a lot of great potential! As for the particular situation, it really is a shame to see how people prioritize. To be honest, you could have a whole section dedicated to just dumb driving! I’ve had people nearly rear-end me while they were texting, and they throw their arms in the air like I’m a monster for not pressing the gas and driving into the backend of the person stopped in front of me. It must have been a terribly important text; maybe something to the effect of “lol” or “laterz!”
Thanks,
Timothy
PS, I freed you from the spam prison. It really is a shame that you get put in there! I really enjoy your comments :(. I always check the spam folders for you and Kevin @ Invest It Wisely. also, Fred has been getting caught up in it. Before you know it, only the spam comments will be approved!
Thanks,
Timothy
Timothy- how could they view me as spam when I have such exciting comments waiting to be heard? 🙂 Thanks for saving me.
Oh my gosh, don’t you hate when drivers get mad at YOU when they are driving like imbeciles?
Wow, I don’t even know what to say about this! I hate it when people treat animals like people! Unless they were going on a long trip, or taking it to the vet, that dog should have been home. I can’t believe his wife agreed to ride in the backseat (or maybe it was her idea). That was dangerous for the driver and the kids!
It was a bad scene all around! I can tell you that I will never, ever sit in the backseat for a dog. (And I would smack any man that would expect me to!)
