Top 5 Movie Car Crashes

Number 5 – Terminator 1 (1984)

This was a very tough decision between the Terminator 2 car chase/crash scene that ends with a truck being turned into an immense fireball, or the original Terminator where the great Arnold Schwarzenegger rams his car into the police station. I decided to go with the original. It’s simply a great scene, where the fearless terminator is being given the run-around by the officer on the police station front desk; he then says the infamous words ‘I’ll be back’ before returning and smashing his vehicle into the police station. Simply brilliant.

Number 4 – No Country for Old Men (2007)

You simply do not see this car crash coming and, that’s what makes it so good. The seemingly invincible Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) gets absolutely taken out by a car, and to everyone’s surprise, he survives with just an injured arm and some small cuts and bruises. For me, what makes this car crash one of my top 5 is the incredible realism with which it’s filmed. You can really feel the whiplash and the impact, and for that reason, it has to be in my top 5.

Number 3 – Die Hard 4.0 (2007)

This makes it to my number 3 simply because I could watch it again and again. Die hard 4.0 yet again stars the brilliant Bruce Willis as John McClane. Although this crash is certainly very far fetched and in no way realistic, it certainly makes up for it with its enjoyment factor. As John McClane is in an underground tunnel with helicopters hovering outside, he only has one thought; to destroy the helicopter with his car, and that’s exactly what he does. It’s completely out of this world, but if anyone can drive a police car up a ramp and aim it to destroy a helicopter, it’s John McClane.

Number 2 – Matrix Reloaded (2003)

300 cars were destroyed in the making of the Matrix Reloaded crash scene, they built their own mile and a half of freeway in order to film it, and its simply one of best car crash scene’s ever. There’s just something thrilling about two trucks traveling towards a head on collision at full speed, and it is one of the best scenes of the movie. This scene took the great Wichowski brothers 3 months to film, and it’s a scene that everyone should watch.

Number 1 – Final Destination 2 (2003)

I’m going to be honest here, I hadn’t seen Final Destination 2 until just a week ago, and the crash scene absolutely blew me away! When a truck inadvertently lets loose its load of timber on the road, the result is simply gruesome mayhem. The vehicle pile up that resulted included a garbage truck, various cars, and a motorcycle- and the result is something that needs to be seen to be believed. This scene fully deserves its place on top spot.

I just hope all the people involved in these crashes had insurance!

From Kris:  What great crash scenes were missed?  Do you have a favorite car chase/crash scene from a movie?   I know my least favorite aspect of car chases and crashes is when they last too long…

“Final Destination 2” was the first thing that popped in my mind.

While I’m not a big fan of the series, I was that scene and was pretty impressed.

I’m glad real life doesn’t happen like in the movies 🙂

Never saw Final Destination 2, but the other 4 were spectacular crashes.

The Final Destination 2 crash is just horrific. One thing is for sure for that series: they never run out of interesting ways to kill people!

The Original Terminator scene was a good one. I always liked that line “I’ll be back”, though it got a bit overused…like a few more of Ah-nold’s lines.

I really enjoyed Terminator 2 when it came out. It’s been many years since I’ve seen it….might be good to revisit sometime.

Final Destination is pretty awesome, because it’s so broken down into little moments of horrific violence.

I think that crash in Death Proof is pretty insane as well.

Max- that is probably why I haven’t seen these movies – all the horrific violence. I am a baby when it comes to blood and gore. I love suspense, but injury is just upsetting to me. I know I am in the minority though. I don’t even like the little blood that they always make drip out the nose when someone is dead. Why is that the universal symbol for death by the way?

I guess one thing about most of these movies is that the violence is so exaggerated that it’s really just fantasy, so it’s easy for me to disassociate it with reality and not perceive it as real violence.

Stuff like Saving Private Ryan gets to me more, because I know in the end it’s pretty much what really happened.

Funny about the bleeding nose, yeah, it goes something like: 1. Last breath releases. 2. Head falls back lifelessly. 3. Nose starts to bleed. 4. New widow starts to cry. – end death scene.

I’m the type of person who likes MMA for the fighting skills and raw human challenge, but can’t watch in the end when the winner is pummeling the losers face mercilessly.

Movies are fantasy though, so it’s something you can experience while knowing nobody is actually getting hurt.

I’m not necessarily into violent movies though, I watch everything from Fellini to Hugh Grant sappy love stories, mainly because my girl is a film buff.

MM – I do love the bloody nose, along with sometimes blood coming down the corner of the mouth. Your sequence of events is right on.

I couldn’t handle Saving Private Ryan and had to leave ‘Born on the 4th of July after about 20 minutes. It just really rattles me for some reason.

I like sappy movies, and funny movies. Oh, and suspense too. I think I even like the first ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’, but I was tougher back then.

It was really fast, but the crash in “The Blind Side” was pretty good too. The idea that he stopped the air bag with his own arm was also really cool…

BFS- I did see that movie! I don’t buy that he stopped that air bag with his arm though, but I guess the sentiment was good! 🙂

LOVED no country for old men. Too chicken to watch final destination. I’m scared of horror flicks and this one was borderline.

Ronin comes to mind. I actually love any car chases that happen on those tiny European roads. It’s not so much as one fantastic crash but a series of little ones.

I liked the car chases in 24… 🙂 I can’t handle much more than that. Actually, I had to leave the room during many scenes in 24.

Check out Death Proof(Grindhouse). About halfway through the movie, there is a collision between two cars and the result is one of the most gory car crashes I have ever seen in a movie.

Ooh, not sure I can stand gory. Maybe I will suggest it to my brother!
