Thoughts For Thursday: Why Is It That….?

in Thoughts For Thursday

This has been a very relaxing week, since much of it was spent on the holidays and being sick on the couch.  During this time, my brain had a chance to stop and think.  Whereas my thoughts have not been mind shattering or life altering, they did make me realize that I don’t always stick to what I tell myself I am going to do.

So, here are a few of my thoughts.  Maybe some of them will resonate with you, or you may just think I am crazy.

  1. Why is it that when you look your worst, you will definitely run into someone you know?  Last weekend, I felt crummy and we all piled in the car to get some ice cream at the Dairy Queen.  My husband went inside to grab the ice cream and I waited in the car.  (Another reason I was not getting out of the car is because I was wearing pajamas and my hair had air-dried that day because I was too blech to spend time drying my hair.)  Anyway, I was sitting there in the car, looking in the mirror and marveling at how awful I looked, when there was a pounding on my car window.  I jumped a mile and half and saw a friend of mine from college standing there with her daughter.  I wanted to crawl away, but there was no way possible to escape the horror which was me.  So, I unrolled the window and told them they didn’t want to be near me since I was sick, but they still talked to me for ten minutes or so.  It was so embarrassing!  I wonder though, did I learn my lesson?  Will I ever leave the house looking like that again?  I think I know the answer, but I don’t want to admit it…
  2. Why do I continue to spend money at the Dairy Queen?  When my husband came out of the DQ with my little cone, I saw how teeny-tiny it was, and yet their prices are ridiculous.  Had I been smart, I just would have asked him to run to the grocery store to get a half gallon of chocolate chip mint.  But, I was going stir-crazy and wanted out of the house.  I don’t know if I will be able to go back to Dairy Queen again and spend that amount of money.  ( I think I have banned Dairy Queen before also.)
  3. Why am I so motivated to exercise when I am sick?  Since I have asthma, it can take me 3 weeks to get over a cold and get back on the treadmill.  When I don’t feel well, I sit there and think about how I want to jump up and clean the whole house and get back to racquetball.  Of course, when I feel perfectly healthy, I can sit here and look at the breakfast dishes still on the table and easily move on to any other task besides clearing the dishes.  When I feel good, I can go a week without exercise.  But when I don’t feel good, I just think “In a week or so, I will be more dedicated to working out and keeping the house in order”.  That lasts about a couple weeks, then life catches back up with me.
  4. Why don’t I roast a turkey more often?  Cooking a turkey is incredibly easy, pretty economical, and can feed a family for a few days.  I usually only do it a few times a year, but why not more?  There are so many great things that can be done with leftovers (stir fry, soup, etc) that you don’t even have to get bored with turkey itself.

Do you ever do something, and then wonder why it wasn’t part of your routine all along?  Or, do you ever do something and swear you will never do it again, only to find you are back to your old ways the next month?  The thoughts written above are the kind that I usually have around New Years Day.  I guess I am just ahead of myself this year!

If only it had been raining- then maybe my friend would not have stopped to chat! 🙂 (Friend if you are reading this, you know I like talking to you. I just didn’t want to be seen!!!)

On the DQ… I haven’t been able to eat it since I was pregnant. Loved it before… could not eat pregnant. Even when I was out of the morning sickness period it came right back up. I figured that was my body telling me it was unnatural.

Nicole, isn’t it funny what pregnancy will do to you? I still can’t eat Cheerios with bananas. I am surprised by the Dairy Queen aversion as it is so darn delicious!

Yup, I definitely run into people I don’t normally see if I leave the house scuzzy. Once in high school I was in my yard reading a book and sunning myself. I needed to run out to grab something from the store. All I had on was my bikini top and a mesh shirt over it (back when I was much thinner). Anyway, wouldn’t you know, I got into a car accident and I looked like a total ho. Ah, the 80s.

I wish I was motivated to work out. Once I’m off the wagon it’s like an act of god to get me to do stuff again. I feel so gross right now and that’s just the worst, trying to start back up again.

I was thinking about the car accident thing too. I can’t believe it actually happened to you though. Was everything ok? Did you get any phone numbers? 🙂

When I am healthy, I try to walk 2 miles a day (at least). I do it watching tv, so it is absolutely painless, and I actually enjoy the down time. I also play racquetball and such, but I try to make sure I at least get my walking in. Is there an activity you could work into your life that you would love that would provide even a little exercise?

Feeling gross is awful. However, even if I get that little bit of exercise in, it changes my whole outlook.

The guy I got into the accident with owned a local diner I used to frequent. I thought he’d spit in my food the first time I saw him but then we ended up being friends.

Anyway, I was super active before kids, mountain biked, rock climbed, snow shoed, dove, mountaineered you name it. Walking around the neighborhood with the kids in the stroller isn’t quite the same as an hour of hard core cardio, plus my joints can’t handle boxing anymore. I take the kids to the pool and stuff, but I’m used to burning millions of calories, so I’ve always eaten a lot. The light duty stuff doesn’t make up for the extra food I eat, hence grossness.

I wonder why the door bell or the phone always ring when I am under the shower or brushing teeth?? Hate those moments of confusion: Do I answer, Do I not, Is it important, What if this or that? And, have you ever wonder why when you pick the choice to not answer it rings and rings over and over again??

Oh my gosh DoNotWait, you are so right. Also 9 times out of 10, the phone will be a solicitor and it is someone selling something at your front door. But the one time you don’t answer….

Love this post – you focus on the truly pressing questions of our time! I’ve gotten to a basic M&M strategy – at least put on moisturizer and mascara before going out – and usually I can face the unexpected meeting at the grocery, gas pump, etc.

I think you’re too hard on DQ, though. You can’t simulate a dipped soft serve cone at home, so it’s OK to pay the extra premium cost as an accessibility fee. The cone will be there when you really, really need it.

I never feel like working out – guess I’ll have to examine my conscience on that one and see if I should change.

I disagree slightly that roasting a turkey is incredibly easy – there’s the carcass/bones to deal with, greasy cleanup, etc. but I will say that I used to fix whole turkeys quite a bit whe I had all my kids at home. We even grilled a whole turkey about every other month on our charcoal grill in the warmer weather. But I do think I’ll roast a turkey this month….

Loved the commentary! I am a fan of the soft-serve cone. However, there are alternative places to go to that are much cheaper. Unfortunately, they are usually not open in the winter…

I guess regarding the turkey, it is a high risk/reward scenario. See, you get your husband to do the prep work and clean up, and you just focus on cooking up leftovers. See, little work for me in terms of prep and cleanup!

Yes, most of your creamy whip stands are shuttered for the season. I guess there’s always McD’s or Wendy’s (even if it’s non-dairy, a frosty is still very worthwhile) for a more reasonably priced fix, but there’s something about a DQ dipped cone…

My hubs, unfortunately, just can’t deal with raw poultry, so I have to prep all birds. He’s fine with eating the final product, however. I guess I should be more forceful about getting him to clean up the drippings, and I’ll remain happy to use the leftovers in all sorts of creative ways.

I rarely wear makeup (foundation to work) and always air dry my hair, so I definitely don’t care when I see people, lol. I figure a smile makes pretty much anyone look good enough, hahaha. I smile alot…

I do get your point though. Murphy’s Law is a pain in the butt. DQ Blizzards are also addictive little bastages…

Do I do something and swear I’ll never do it again, and then go back to old way?

Yep. My caffeine drinking is back. 🙁

I had a popular post on my first month without caffeine, and I actually made it even longer without caffeine. I really felt better, much better, without caffeine. Now, I slipped back into it.

At least I have the confidence to know that I can drop the habit for an extended period of time, as I have done it before. Actually, I had previously done so for over a year.

The key is sticking to the change and making it permanent. Still working on it….

I inevitably have been running into “people I would like to hire me” when looking my worst. Sweats on Saturday morning means I will DEFINITELY run into some senior person where I would love love love a job. Alas. It’s the rule of the universe.

I generally do not appreciate health until I am sick. And then I swear up and down that whenever I am better, I will be so healthy and appreciate it! Eat well! Exercise! Wash my hands all the time! And so on. As soon as I’m better, I forget. I’m getting over the flu now, so hopefully *this* time will be different!

Good thoughts, Kris. Why do we keep doing the things we do? Me, it’s eating sunflower seeds in the truck. The darn shells end up everywhere, and every time I vacuum the inside I resolve to not do that again, or at least be more careful. Right…..

As for your encounter at the DQ, it could have been worse. I once ran across a friend who was deeply absorbed in acts of personal facial hygiene. She was embarrassed, and I pretended not to notice.
(pun alert!) …….. Face was saved on both sides.

Kris December 4, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Great pun! Oh your poor friend, and you will remember that forever I am sure!

Regarding sunflower seeds, why don’t you just eat the shells? I always ate the shells. Wonderfully salty. Or you could buy the ones that are already shelled, or are they not as rewarding?

Hello!

I hate that about running into people when you literally just step out of the house looking awful (because you don’t care…as long as you don’t run into somebody).

And DQ…I love their blizzards! I haven’t had one for about a year now though….:)

My favorite Blizzard is the banana split Blizzard (minus pineapple, extra strawberries).

I don’t live in a small town, but I do know a lot of people around here. I should know better than to leave the house all scary looking!

Unfortunately, I think it is really easy for us all to say to ourselves that we are not going to do something again only to do it later. A lot of the time we haven’t dealt with the root of the problem, so our restraint efforts are sometimes doomed to fail from the start. It’s all quite tragic and sometimes demoralizing: like the person who keeps on quitting “bad” food. This is one reason I practice moderation with respect to eating; it is much easier to moderate than omit foods entirely.

Kris December 4, 2010 at 10:42 pm

Oh my gosh, you are so right. Whenever I cut something out entirely, I end up so crabby! It is like they say, don’t totally deprive yourself of dessert, just have a couple bites. Usually that is all I truly need.

When something isn’t ‘natural’ to do, it seems so easy for other priorities to leap right in front at the first opportunity. At least that seems to be my problem!

DoNotWait December 3, 2010 at 11:27 am

@Roshawn,
Very much agree with you. Moderation is always a better choice, though we sometimes have to change habits dramatically in order to really change ourselves. “Cheating” on bad food so to call is just so easy for some persons that it leads them directly back to the starting point, which was not moderation…

I watched one of those shows featuring the super-obese. There was a guy that lost like 600-700 pounds and totally changed his life around. He was celebrating some accomplishment one day and ate a Nathan’s hot dog. That was all it took and he ended right back where he started. It was so darn sad.

My grandma used to say that no matter what happens and no matter how you feel, always look your best because you never know whom you can run into. I never follow her advise. Especially on the weekends… I like casual, no makeup look. I do dress up and use makeup for work but on the weekends I really lay low… Oh well… People should be able to accept natural beauty, right? LOL

Kris December 4, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Aloysa – yes, everyone needs to appreciate us for our natural look. I am actually a very natural gal. Scents make me wheeze and many skin products cause me problems to. So, what you see is pretty much what you get! 🙂

When we moved closer to the office, I learned quickly that I will run into coworkers at the various nearby stores on weekends and evenings. It happened once in 12 years when I lived 25 miles away!

Anyway, I always make sure both my husband I don’t look too bad when running errands!

P.S. I agree about the turkey; so easy and so good!

Reply

Kris December 8, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Oh running into coworkers is the worst because you have to see them everyday! (Well, 5 days a week…)

Now you have me craving turkey again. I think dinner for Christmas will be ham, so I need to plan another turkey dinner soon.
