Thoughts For Thursday: Streams of Thought

in Thoughts For Thursday

Again, my apologies for my absence, and my thanks to Deidre for the guest post this week.

Anyway, it is Thursday, which means I get to share my thoughts.  I won’t share all of them, as then this post would be about 14 billion words long.  It would make ‘War and Peace’ seem like a quick read.  So, I will have to pull out some random tidbits to share…

  1. I cannot tell you how nice it felt to walk around in the sun and 50 degree weather yesterday.  I love life’s little gifts…
  2. Life is not always black and white, there are also many, many shades of gray in between.
  3. Speaking of gray, do you prefer to write ‘grey’ or ‘gray’?  As a kid, I learned ‘gray’ and I remember correcting people when they wrote ‘grey’.  I still can’t write ‘grey’ without getting a little brain twitch.
  4. It is interesting how priorities can change in the blink of an eye.  One day, something can seem incredibly important, like paying off your mortgage.  The next day, that same priority doesn’t even rank in the top 5 anymore.
  5. It bums me out that Border’s Books went bankrupt.  I have always preferred Barnes and Noble over Border’s, but I feel like books are becoming less and less important to people.  Maybe the Nook, Kindle and Ipads have contributed to the demise of brick and mortar bookstores and people are still reading.  However, I think electronic reading devices are probably just a small part of the equation.

That is about all I have time for at the moment.   It felt good to write again!  Thanks for visiting….

I hope everything is ok with your family.

I prefer grey, but spellcheck disagrees.

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Thank you Nicole…

I am with spell check!! Grey is a bad word.

The Biz of Life February 17, 2011 at 8:46 am

Gray is the American spelling, while grey is the English spelling—– kinda like color and colour. Seeing a little sun and warmth in the middle of winter is a wonderful thing. I’m not sorry Borders went bankrupt. They were always kinda third rate compared to amazon and B&N, but the may reorganize and come back stronger…. only time will tell.

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Biz – you just never know- they may just come back stronger. I agree with your view in that B&N was always far superior.

Warm today, but cold is coming. Gotta get a walk in before it is too late!

Deidre February 17, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Ahhh I thought that was the case – the spelling of Gray/Grey 🙂 Good to know!

Miss T @ Prairie Eco-Thrifter February 17, 2011 at 9:39 am

I felt the same way yesterday. We had just awesome weather for February. I seriously enjoyed my walk home in the bright sunshine and warm temperature.

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:39 pm

We are warm again today – hope you are getting more of the same!

MoneyCone February 17, 2011 at 9:45 am

Glad you are back Kris! Hope everything’s back to normal!

Borders going down, cities cutting funding for libraries, NPR losing funding…

Priorities are so messed up!

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:39 pm

MC- Thanks for the greeting!

Priorities are really screwed up. Problem is, people/companies don’t manage their money properly when times are good, so when times are bad, things just fall apart.

Crystal @ BFS February 17, 2011 at 11:29 am

Hope all is well! Here’s my stream of conciousness:

1) I need ti start commenting more again but I’m behind on my writing.
2) I need to write more but I’m not in the mood.
3) I should rpobably be doing real work at my real job right this second but I am sooooo unmotivated today
4) In short, I feel too lazy to do anything right now, lol. 🙂

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:35 pm

BFS – Here is my thought in response t your thoughts: Just do what you can, and don’t look back. Get a different perspective if you are stuck in a rut. Take a break. I barely wrote a word for 10 days and I didn’t even care about my stats or anything, and my blog just kind of took care of itself. Not saying it is the best thing to do, but I am just saying, taking a few days off is fine.

Suba @ Wealth Informatics February 17, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Hope everything is fine with you and your family, Kris!

I learned to spell it as grey. But spell check complains, so I change it. If I write it on a paper, I won’t even notice that it I wrote it as grey. I am going to miss borders a lot. That is where I buy a lot of my new books, with their 40% off coupon, it almost always beats amazon if I am buying the books new. Hopefully they won’t go into liquidation and come back ok with reorg.

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Thanks Suba!

I think I have a problem because I don’t even like looking at the word ‘grey’. I wonder if there is a grey phobia?

Squirrelers February 17, 2011 at 2:24 pm

Kris, I hope all is ok with you and the family.

As for your post, I have some thoughts:

1) It’s 60 degrees today, which is fantastic considering the brutal weather than came through 2 short weeks ago. Hard to imagine that there was a 20.5 inch blizzard with 65mph winds and then temps below zero in the aftermath. Much of the snow is melted, though shopping mall parking lots still have massive mounds of snow unmelted.

2) Sometimes it actually is black or white. Others, there are many more shades of gray than meets the eye. Or is it “grey”.

3) I’m a grammar police type of person. That said, while I learned to spell it “gray”, I like to spell it “grey”. It’s one of those things that you just catch yourself wondering how to handle.

4) My priorities from 10 years ago are vastly different from my priorities today, and to some degree different from those of some who are close to me. Things can change quickly to – as in 10 minutes instead of 10 years.

5) I prefer Barnes and Noble, but now have to make sure I can use the $25 Borders gift card I possess. This might end up teaching me a lesson that we should use gift cards soon after getting them, in case something happens….like this.

Kris February 17, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Squirrel, thank you for your well wishes.

I think it is around 57 here, and it is wonderful. The winds are supposed to come and now they say measurable snow on Monday. Blech. But I will accept today as the gift that it is.

My priorities are different today than they were 2 weeks ago, and I am sure they will change again. I have learned a lot in that the key is in how you react to situations as much as the situation itself. However, reactions can be hard to control.

One of the things I do when I need a break is head to Barnes and Noble, buy a book, and read while I have some hot chocolate. That is great therapy for me!

Deidre February 17, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Kris…Well wishes for you and the family!
As always, it’s my pleasure and I enjoyed the guest posting experience!

I didn’t know that about Borders! Thats too bad because they often carried books that B&N refused to keep in stock.

Enjoy your hot chocolate!

Lindy Mint February 17, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Don’t worry, we know you’re not a robot, but a real person with a real life. That’s why we keep coming back for your thoughts. 🙂

I really wish there was a correct spelling of grey/gray. It makes me uncomfortable that it is an either/or situation because I’m always second guessing myself. But it is ironic that this particular word has this condition, considering its connotation.

Here’s hoping that Barnes and Noble’s Nook is enough to keep them in business so we at least have somewhere to go. I went to college in a small town and a Barnes and Noble was built there during that time. The locals protested that it was going to shut down all of the smaller bookstores in town (it did). Now it’s funny that we are clinging to them.

First Gen American February 17, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Along those lines, I also find it amazing how much my risk tolerance has changed now that I have a family to think about and take care of.

The warmth felt good indeed.
