Thoughts For Thursday – Random Musings

in Thoughts For Thursday

Today, I decided I am just going to vent a bit.  It is my Thoughts for Thursday post, so I am just going to share my random thoughts/rants.

  1. I have had it with BP and the fact they still have not fixed this oil leak.  It is literally depressing to watch that oil spew out of the pipes into the water.  When video of the leak is shown on the news, I have to turn my head like I am watching a Friday the 13th movie.  I cannot imagine what it is like to live in one of the gulf states and actually be affected by it in day-to-day life.  I wish someone could just fix the problem.
  2. I am tired of the heat and humidity.  I feel trapped in my house like I do in mid February.  My heart breaks for those that are homeless or do not have access to air conditioning.
  3. I miss good TV shows like Seinfeld.  Now Steve Carrell is leaving The Office after this year.  All I will have after that is 30 Rock, if that stays past next year.
  4. Could we please get a little rain up here soon?
  5. I would like some good news for the economy.  Perhaps a stock market rebound?  Some new jobs?  All economic news is just plain depressing.  Actually, now that I think about it, all news is depressing.  At least my Detroit Tigers are doing well.  I will just focus on that and forget about how retirement is going to be pushed further and further out.  Thanks Tigers!
  6. For all you drivers out there that love to jump over to the right lane at a red light just so you don’t have to be behind one car, please stop doing that so I can turn right on red.  Thank you.
  7. What happened to the ‘Do Not Call List’?  I am getting inundated with calls from just about everyone begging for me to sign up for this or that.  Maybe I need to re-list myself?
  8. If I hold the door for someone, I want them to say thank you.  I believe some individuals think everyone else was born just to serve them.
  9. Can someone please make it so that commercials and TV shows are broadcast at the same volume?  I am sick of turning up the volume to hear a TV show and then being scared out of my mind when it switches to a loud commercial.
  10. If you have a lawn service, please tell them not to start mowing until after 8:00 am.  I don’t want to be woken up to the roar of a million lawn mowers driving all over my neighbor’s yard at 6:45 in the morning.

I apologize if I am seeming just too crabby today.  I think the heat is getting to me.  Anyone else want to vent?  Feel free to comment below!

Great list! How about this one – For the fast food folks who prepare my drink at a drive thru, please do not fill the entire cup with ice. It would be nice to actually get more than two sips from a $1 drink!

Dave – So true on the icy drinks -that always angers me. Restaurants must make a killing off of soft drinks.

Well the market did rebound yesterday and the volume/TV thing was passed in congress last year (I think it takes place next year.
The rain is being kept here- in Kansas, sorry!
Vent away- it feels good!

Thanks for the info Jan! I did like that market bounce yesterday, but it seems to be trending down of late. I hope yesterday was not an anomaly.

I had no idea that Congress was going to handle volume control. That is actually kind of funny!

Thanks for stopping by!

Sorry about #6. I would do this less if people would just drive the speed limit. It is so frustrating to be driving down the road where the speed limit is 50 and people are driving 35 – 40 mph.

Greg – You can drive in the right lane, as long as you don’t change to it during a red light, and just sit there while I am behind you waiting to turn right on red.

Deal?

Great list. My Mom and I got a good laugh about the volume of TV shows and commercials. So true.

And I was going to offer you some of our rain here in Kansas, but I see Jan has already brought that up.

I’m going to be in the minority on this one (and I don’t want to hear about it), but I don’t blame BP. It’s a horrible situation, granted, but people and companies make mistakes. It happens to all of us and to them.

And my lawn service shows up in the late afternoon, since I don’t want to wake anyone up either.

Victoria – If it doesn’t storm here tonight and break this heat wave, I may lose my mind.

Regarding BP, I know they are in a horrible situation. However, I just can’t understand how they didn’t have better plans in place to handle a problem like this. I am sure I am oversimplifying it, but I just find it puzzling. I am glad my mistakes do not affect so many people, that is for sure!

Thanks for waiting to have your yard taken care of later in the day. I had to actually talk to a neighbor once, begging to have their lawn service start a little later because it kept waking up the baby wayyy to early in the morning.

Fantastic list. BIG DIDDO for the heat and humidity! It’s been in the mid-90’s in Houston with the humidity at 70-90% for weeks…I’m getting crabby…

I’d like to add: Drivers, please stop littering. If I see one more cigarette getting tossed out of a window, I’m going to have a melt-down…

Kris July 8, 2010 at 1:33 pm

BFS – We can be crabby together. Oh, and I ditto your comment about people that just toss their cigarettes everywhere. I don’t know why they don’t think it is littering, or at least they don’t seem to.

I saw a McDonald’s employee do that right before she entered the building to work her shift… And the funny thing was that about 4 more feet away was a cigarette disposal can!

I think she is in her late 50s or early 60s, so I’m sure she has been doing that forever. Sometimes I wish I was a police officer, just so I could give people like that tickets!

Love the list! I also agree with Dave on the cup of ice. I heard that it only costs a restauarant about 7 cents per soft drink. I am happy that so many places are offering .99 drinks this summer. Saves me a few cents and they are still making a killing (of course I could fill a water bottle from home, save money and it would be better for me but I typically don’t).

I would add to the rant the people that walk very slowly down the middle of the aisle in parking lots. Can you not hear me behind you? Why can’t you walk to one side. You are one person and you are blocking my van – MOVE OVER!

Thanks – I feel better:)

Diane, can I drive behind you in parking lots while you scream at all those slow-walkers to get out of the way? I hate that at the grocery store too, when 3 slow walkers stroll side-by-side, blocking my progress. I also like how the people stare at you in parking lots as you try to get around them, like you are doing something wrong.

Hubby and I like to scare the crud out of the slow walkers by sneaking up on them in the Prius until they realize we are like 3 feet away…mean, maybe, but very satisfying. 🙂

Budgeting in the Fun Stuff July 8, 2010 at 2:23 pm

I should add that we obviously don’t do that unless we’ve seen them giving dirty looks at other cars trying to get through.

Kris July 8, 2010 at 9:45 pm

BFS – that Prius is shockingly quiet! People are so busy walking and texting that they don’t even notice that cars might actually be in the parking lot. So frustrating!

Hi Kris!

We’ve started watching “Lost” which we really enjoy on Netflix. We agree that a lot of good TV shows are gone, and not being proprly replaced. Additionally, we’ve noticed the lack of thank yous. Even the simple wave for letting someone into traffic seems to have all but vanished… Maybe all of us like minded should move together into the same town. lol!

Thanks,

You’re comment about the economy got me thinking of my latest Rants..Product Quality. Has anyone else noticed that with all the layoffs, etc, product quality is out the window?

I buy a lot of name brands and just in the last week, I wrote a letter to 3 major companies for having defective products on their shelves. Paying a premium for something that is NOT up to they’re usual quality standards ruffles my feathers. I want them to know that consumers notice..and maybe they’ll hire back some of their QC and Manufacturing folks. Unemployment will go back down and everyone will be happy.

Kris July 8, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Sandy – keep writing those letters, you never know what you may get as a ‘sorry’ from the company.

One thing I have noticed along with low quality products (like my HP laptop) is low quality customer service. It is like I am pleasantly surprised when I am treated well if I call technical support or whoever.

Yeah, most have been nice and send me coupons. I’m actually thinking about writing a few letters to the brands that I love (like Glide floss and Skippy) and have never had issues with. Just so that some companies get testimonials too. People take the time to complain, but they don’t always take time out to compliment.

Kris July 9, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Sandy – that is so true, people never compliment enough. I also sell some things on Amazon, and a positive ‘review’ just makes my day! I bet you will get coupons for your nice notes too.

Money Reasons July 8, 2010 at 5:20 pm

I hate when I’m late to get to work and I go through the drive-thru and the person in front of me gives multiple orders while in line. The person in front of me has to know that it’s almost 8:00, and everybody need to get their shot of java and hussle to work. But there they are, changing their mind on their order, and ordering for at least 2 other people.

Now I just read a book while in line, so it doesn’t bother me as much now… but when I was a kid, I use to get so angry!

Kris July 8, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Money Reasons – you would hate to behind my family of 5, although we are never at the drive thru in the morning.

I also hate when people take forever to dig money out of their wallets. Or, when they slowly pull out their checkbook after the cashier is all done totaling the groceries. Fill the darn check out while you wait, and just fill out the amount at the last second.

Oh no, now I have thought of another rant. When I am at the grocery store and the clerk makes no effort to even pretend like she is going to bag your groceries. She stares at you, expecting you to bag. Keep in mind, I have no problem bagging, I quite often just do it myself anyway. But when I get that ‘feeling’ from a cashier, I will always hesitate.

Argh! The checkbook in the grocery line ticks me off!!! Either fill it out and simply write in the total or use a darn debit card/credit card people!!! It’s not rocket science…

Not thanking someone for holding the door for them is a huge pet peeve of mine! I have actually resorted to saying ” You are welcome!” if they say nothing at all after I’ve held the door for them. Courtesy people! I must say that I am even more upset when I am pregnant and still hold the door for people walking up behind me. If those people don’t thank me, I get pissed.

What about the people driving 40 or 45 mph on Metro Pkwy/16 mile/Big Beaver even though they just raised the speed limit to 55mph? The high speed limit is the only reason I take that route and there are always people going a lot slower in all lanes of traffic! It drives me crazy!

Oh, and the Michigan roundabouts….I could write pages of rants about them. We did not grow up with roundabouts, Michiganders will never understand them nor will they navigate them correctly. Unless the state is going to send us all to Europe to experience true roundabouts, I say get rid of them! 🙂

Reply

Kris July 8, 2010 at 9:52 pm

BW – I too have started saying ‘you are welcome’ when people stroll on past while I hold the door for them. That is one thing I do miss about being pregnant, is generally people are nicer to you.

Roundabouts are a nightmare, and I hate that they are going up around here. My most dreaded roundabout is the Dupont Circle one in DC. My heart starts racing just thinking about it. I don’t get why they are rising in popularity, they scare me.

OK… you’ve just reminded me that the neighbor’s lawn guy will be here at a ridiculously early hour tomorrow morning, so I’d better get my rear into bed!

And I fear neither the oil spill nor the economy are going to get much better very soon. When will people learn that a little regulation can be a good thing?

Reply

Kris July 9, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Greeniac – There was a lawn service mowing our lawn today at 8:00 am, and I don’t even have a lawn service. No idea what was going on there!

Cuz it’s kinda freezing here in SF at 55-68 degrees during summer!

Samurai, I live in the metro-Detroit area. It has been absolutely oppressive here.

LOL, I’d like to chime in with just a helpful (I hope) thought: I’m pretty sure you do have to sign back up with the Do Not Call registry after five years. Hope that lets you tick #7 off your list! 🙂

And I’ll offer a variant on #6: If you’re sitting in the right lane, not turning on red, then don’t turn on red when the light turns green! I’m just going to be annoyed you wasted my time sitting there.

Reply

Kris July 12, 2010 at 9:18 am

Revanche – do not call was only for 5 years? Well, I will be fixing that little situation today – thank you!
