Thoughts For Thursday – I Can’t Take the Heat!

in Thoughts For Thursday

As most of you probably have realized by now, I live in Michigan.

When people think of Michigan, they usually don’t think of blistering heat and droughts.

However, that is exactly what this summer has been.  It was in the 90s on my kid’s first day of school, which was August 30th.  To make matters worse, the humidity is high too.  It has just been oppressive.  You know it is bad when the weather forecasters issue the millionth ‘ozone action day’, and asthmatics are told to stay in the house.

Sounds fun…

I don’t like heat.  I like warm.  The average high temperature for this time of year is supposed to be the mid 70s, not the low 90s.    We haven’t had any rain either.  I believe the total for August was around half an inch.  The grass in the park that backs up to my house is so dry, it is like walking on little needles.  Brown, frail, dry needles.

Many of you may be saying ‘well, just wait until it is snowing and cold in January’.  Well, I like snow!  Part of the reason I never wanted to move to the south is because I didn’t want to feel trapped in my house for months because of the heat.  Unfortunately, that is what it has been like for the month of August up here.

Rumor has it that we are supposed to get a cold front this weekend, with highs being only in the upper 60s.  I do feel bad for all of those that have Labor Day plans.  However, for me personally, I welcome the break.  (Plus, my only plan is to watch soccer, which I can do perfectly well while wearing a sweater.)  The heat is just making me plain crabby.  I will say though that I have obviously turned into a big baby in adulthood because I remember many hot summers as a child, and we did not have air conditioning back then either.  I guess people are right, kids must be resilient because I handled the heat much better at the age of 10 than I do at the age of 43.

How was your summer?  As much as I hate that the kids are back in school, I welcome the fall weather.  I think I will go get some cider and doughnuts this weekend to welcome the cooler weather!

Is it sad that I’m jealous it’s only in the 90s where you are?
AND the air conditioning broke at my office yesterday. I sure hope it is fixed.
I guess that’s why we have such a big house…

But the summer heat is the price we pay for being able to afford a house. If the weather were nice year round it would be a lot more expensive out here.

I have to say, I remember hot humid midwestern summers and that’s why I swore I would always be able to have and afford air conditioning.

I’m right here in Michigan with you. The heat has been remarkable but the lack of rain has been the most noticeable thing here. I have leaves falling in my yard because the trees are just not able to get any moisture from the ground.

The mid-60’s Saturday forecast is annoying if for no other reason than we wanted to get one last trip into the beach this summer before it closes, and Saturday was our planned day. You’d think that with every day being in the 80’s or 90’s for the last three months, the chances would be good, but there’s Michigan for you 🙂

Money Beagle – doesn’t it just figure that the one day you have plans is the day it decides to rain? I think the other day it rained a little was for the Dream Cruise.

What beach were you heading to?

In the DC area, we’ve alternated from the high 90’s and bone dry to the 70’s and 80’s with lots of rain. The vegetables in the garden don’t like this kind of fluctuation one bit.

Biz – one good thing about our weather is the tomatoes from my garden are unusually sweet. (I am guessing it is from all the sun, but maybe I just bought great seeds this year.)

It’s been 90-100 here in Houston, TX for 2 months and the humidity is ALWAYS between 50-99%. But, I understand that if I lived in Michigan, heat and humidity would tick me off. It ticks me off here and it’s expected…my perfect weather would be 55-75 degrees with humidity below 50%. 🙂

Only 100? No record-breaking highs of 113?

It’s cold in my office today. Yay!

Nicole – glad the AC is working again!

I would be miserable in 100 degree weather!

Yeah, I just don’t go outside unless I have to. 🙂

BFS – I love 70-75 degrees, which is why I enjoy fall so much. Humidity is just awful, that is what keeps me inside as much as anything.

It’s been a pretty hot week here, too, but hey… it only gets colder from here on! Enjoy the last heat of the year!

Kevin – I don’t mind the cold. To me, it is better than heat and humidity. (However, I don’t want the temps to be below 0, that is for sure.)

I mirror your thoughts, and even your labor day weekend plans (soccer tournament this weekend).

I’m welcoming fall to, but I’m hoping the heat lessens but carries through into fall a bit. Summer has been so hot, that it would be great to have a warm (mid 70’s) fall for a while…

I love an Indian summer, but 75 is my favorite temperature.

I will also be at soccer tournaments this weekend. There will be a chill in the air, which is just fine with me!

Yeah, some of the other parents and I were joking about breaking out the winter coats! 🙂

We’re not thinking about going canoeing on Monday too, if the kids want to (my son has been wanting to go canoeing again since last fall).

Good luck to your son’s team!!!

Money Reasons – I am definitely breaking out the jeans and fall-coats this weekend! Canoeing would be fun though, hopefully it will warm up enough to do it. Have fun with soccer!

We had a late summer. The peak was a couple of weeks ago and we touched 110. It was horrible and the AC broke the same day and stayed like that for the whole weekend. Now it is much better, around late 80s and 90s. But it is never humid here… only dry heat…

Suba – 110 sounds awful, regardless of the humidity. I cannot imagine how hot the cars must get inside!

We had plenty of hot weather, with quite a few days in the 90’s, but I didn’t think it was unusual for our area. It’s been very dry for the past few weeks, however, and the unwatered grass is pretty brown. But like you, I had spectacular tomatoes this summer – I did have to keep watering them, though.

Lola – I wonder if the heat has helped the tomatoes everywhere then. OK, then there is one benefit to the weather!

Here in Chicago, it’s been hot as well. Makes sense that there would be similarities, as we aren’t that far from Michigan:)

The one thing about this summer, aside from the consistent hot weather, has been the massive downpours that have happened here. There have been some really heavy rains come through on multiple occasions this year. Not much in terms of “severe” weather, but some monsoon-type conditions. The mosquitos seemed to come from nowhere after that.

I like the seasons here. For the most part, that is. Summer heat is my favorite, actually, as long as it’s not too humid. I truly enjoy fall, and like the first few snows as we enjoy the holidays. Once January rolls around, the winter weather gets old. So, I would say that May through December is fine with me, the rest I would rather be someplace warm.

Squirreler – I typically love the Michigan weather too, it has just been an unpleasant summer for me here.

We have not gotten any heavy rains at all. I know your area usually gets hit much harder than where I live.

And, I agree. May-December is probably the perfect mix of weather. February can really get on my nerves.

Ahhh! I love summer but sometimes I feel like I can pass out from a heat stroke because it’s so hot. I’m sure it’s not the kind of hot that you’re experiencing in Michigan though because over here in Southern California it’s not too bad. Love that Fall is coming!

Kris September 4, 2010 at 8:49 am

Mandy – isn’t it funny that Southern California is more comfortable than Michigan? You would expect the total opposite!
