A few weeks ago, we had issues with our sink and we had to hire a plumber. The plumber was in the kitchen chatting with me when I glanced over at the wall and saw one of my pictures on the wall was crooked. Being the polite person I am, I kept looking forward to chat with the plumber while oddly leaning against the couch to adjust the picture. As I leaned over the couch with my feet planted, I heard several popping sounds. The pain was excruciating, but since the plumber was there, I couldn’t yell expletives and cry like I wanted to. I just calmly sat down and thought I might implode. After the plumber left, I tested my leg and was able to walk around. However, my leg was giving out on me, and I knew I was in trouble. (I blew out my right knee playing soccer years ago and had 3 surgeries on that knee.) I got an MRI the next day, and of course, my ACL was completely torn.
I discussed my options with a sports medicine doctor and an orthopedist, both who suggested surgery if I planned on doing any more than walking completely straight the rest of my life. (And hope I never slip on ice or trip on a pine cone.) Given how much the leg was getting on my nerves, and the fact I don’t want this knee to limit my activities the rest of my life, I decided to have ACL reconstruction done. The surgery is actually today (January 12th, 2012).
I must say this is probably the dumbest injury I have ever had. The doctor theorizes that my ACL was partially torn previously, and this little twist just tore it the rest of the way. Whatever, I just know that I am incredibly mad at myself. I am mad at the plumber too, but not sure why.
So, I will be taking a little break. If you find you miss me, please feel free to dig through my old posts (with your Alexa bar on, of course) and poke around. I may be bored out of my mind during recovery and end up online constantly, who knows. Maybe if I get some good painkillers I will end up writing the post of my life, so make sure you don’t stray too far!
See you soon!

I’m so sorry to hear this! I pray you have a great surgery and speedy recovery. I’ll definitely miss your voice and will await your return. My Alexa toolbar and I will definitely be visiting in the meantime!
Dude, that is awful! I too am sorry to hear this. Hope you have a swift recovery and that it isn’t too serious. We’ll miss your posts!
That’s crazy. I haven’t had anything like this happen though not for a lack of trying. Last year I decided I wanted to slide the workbench in our garage over a few inches. Did I mention that this thing weighs probably 400 pounds as my wife’s grandfather built it years back apparently using steel and heaviest wood possible? I braced myself on my back leg and let it push. It moved about two inches and I felt my muscle actually start tearing in my leg with all the pressure I was putting on it. Luckily I was able to stop before it tore too much, and it was so minor that I was only limping for a day or so. But, stuff like that does weaken things over the long term so who knows what will eventually cause it to one day finish tearing more, something that, like you, would eventually require surgery?
Good luck on the recovery. You get bored, you could blog more 😉
Ouch! Sorry to hear that Kris. Good luck and get well soon! You will be missed!
Yowza. Hope your surgery goes ok and that it is a quick recovery. Like MB said- if you are bored while recovering, just network and blog more. lol
Sorry ti hear that, but then it will be fixed. Right?
Sorry to hear this. Hope you have a speedy recovery. I have a bum knee too. 🙁
You have to be more careful from now on and pay attention to you knee at all time.
Oh no! Sorry that you’re dealing with this injury. Please don’t be tough on yourself about it, people get injured in so many seemingly innoccuous, inadvertent ways. I once got injured simply checking the car tire pressure for the father of a girl I was dating. Not sure why he couldn’t do it himself and asked me, but anyway, I was out of commission for a short while and got a cortisone shot eventually if I recall. Just dumb of me to try to be overly accomodating. Separate life lesson. But, stuff happens, and I might have been on the verge of the injury anyway, and that’s what was the final straw.
All the best for a speedy recovery!
Oh no! Hope surgery goes well and that you’ll be on the mend soon. Please post an update when you are feeling up to it.
Ay!
Very sorry to hear about your knee, Kris, hope the fix and the recovery go…. well, tolerable. ACL injuries suck mightily, they just eventually get better little by little. I admire your self-control, though. I would have just turned the air blue with curses.
Funny, I’ve been finishing my basement, 1600 sq feet of framing (done) electrical work (done), and finally 120 sheets of drywall (nearly finished).
A year ago, I twist my back getting out of the car, and was in such pain, I was on the bathroom floor for 4 hrs, then in bed a week. You can’t pay attention to every motion you make. I sure wish I could.
Get better soon.
Yikes – that was an unlucky twist of fate! Don’t feel bad that you might have brought it on yourself by being polite to your plumber – like the doc said, it was most likely just the final pull on the tear. I’d say you get more of an Iron Woman Award for not sharing your pain right there and then. Hope your surgery went well yesterday and that you are feeling better. As always, look forward to reading your tips and thoughts on getting the most from your recovery.
Wow, sounds worse that I initially imagined!
I think it was brilliant of you to get it fixed, why lessen your lifestyle by having a nagging injury!
I’ll be patiently waiting for you to return! 🙂
We will miss you. Good luck and hope for a very uneventful and complication free experience.
Yikes sorry to hear that Kris! Hope you feel better soon!
It just occurred to me as well that it’s good you’re an employee and not a contractor now I guess? That was an anti-Darwin move – what brilliant timing!
Oh that’s horrible Kris. Here’s to a quick recovery.
Ouch! Ive had knee problems for a while now and I know how much it stinks! Hoping you feel better and that it went well 🙂
Ow! Good luck with the recovery! And, no, you will not win a Darwin award for that 😉
Get well soon! Hopefully you’ll heal fast. 🙂
I will catch up on your recovery post, Kris! Hope that all went well!
