In case you hadn’t read this recently enough, I absolutely love Fall in Michigan. This weekend has been exceptional here: Sunny and 80 degrees! During weekends like this, I totally disagree with Financial Samurai’s stance that West Coast is best!

To further my point, I decided to post a couple pictures, one from my backyard, and the other from one of my favorite picnic spots a couple miles from my house.
I will say the West coast has a lot of positives. But I will take an 80 degree October day in Michigan over just about anything.
Not to mention all the great things that go along with a day like this: watching the leaves fall from the trees, the smell of burning leaves, going for a walk and enjoying the warm breeze and beautiful colors, and so much more!
As a side note, do they even have cider mills on the West coast? If not, that is another negative! I will admit though that when the leaves are gone and the high is 40 degrees, my opinions do change somewhat…

as a Michigan native I can totally relate to where you are coming from. however, what are your thoughts on where the state is headed? it is still not diversified, the government is still fixated on running it to the ground, there are still rumors of selling the state to the French, and a growing deficit that is larger than many countries. any chance of real estate stabilizing/bouncing back anytime? i understand that this may not fit the context of your blog, but as a well wisher of MI and someone genuinely interested in its progress (i still have many friends, family and rental properties in MI), I am always interested in talking about it with similar minded folks who live there.

I have no idea where the state is headed. We have an election coming up next month, and I cannot wait for it to be over.
I hate to say this in fear it will curse our poor state, but I am seeing signs of optimism. People say their amount of work is picking up, although part of it may be that so many people have been let go that there is more work for those left behind.
In synopsis, I am putting my viewpoint at cautiously optimistic. However, I have deep worries about the city of Detroit.
There are cider mills on the West Coast. 🙂 And fall-colored leaves. In the South, not so much.
Michigan is great. Occasionally we’ll special order something from Zingerman’s.
Nicole – I didn’t know cider mills existed out west, at least not in California. (My brother lives near LA and he says he always wants to go to a cider mill back in Michigan when fall rolls around.)

There’s local cider in various cities in California (he may be able to find some at his local farmer’s market). Heck, Martinelli’s is based out there!
I definitely agree with the part about the weather changing. My affection for Midwest weather certainly waxes and wanes.
Roshawn, I think my affinity for Michigan may wane quite soon. However, I will love it again when it starts to snow, at least for a month or so. Actually, I can’t imagine being anywhere but here at Christmas. Come February though, I am dying for some spring.
I wish I could bring my son up in the midwest around midwesterners… but without the summer and winter!
I’ve never been to Michigan, but love the Chesapeake Bay area and the mountains of western Virginia when the seasons start to change.
Biz – I keep saying I want to head to the mountains in the fall, but I still have not made it. Maybe once the kids are graduated and I don’t have to worry about school schedules.
That is an AWESOME view from your patio. I am totally jealous now 😉 But I will wait for you to come back when it gets colder 😛

Michigan in October is a good place to be. Even if the weather was 20 degrees cooler, it would still be fun, with the leaves, college football, apple cider, etc. Actually, I’m looking forward to that. I hope it doesn’t go from summer-like weather to 40’s in a blink!
I do have to say thought that this weekend was great here in the Upper Midwest. Our weather in Chicago is of couse similar to yours in Detroit, and it was fantastic here – in the 80’s on Saturday and Sunday. We went to the Chicago Botanical Gardens to enjoy it.
By the way, that’s a great view you have from your patio!
I never liked Dee-Troit. My company threatened to send us there multiple times and my husband and I both said we’d quit first. (But mainly because our family was on the east coast) When I was in high school I got sponsored on this women in engineering thing at Michigan Tech and I remember getting fogged in for 2 extra days in July.
I love Ann Arbor and Royal Oak..and there’s one other nice place, Birmingham maybe? Even Grand Rapids is kind of cool. It’s been years since I’ve gone there regularly. Oh and the stuff you do with cherries is divine..and your cutesy antique shops. Okay, maybe it’s not that bad once you go north a bit.
Those pictures look like fall in New England. Who would’ve thunk it was so nice there this time of year.
Nice photos! That is cool to have that open space right next to the house! I also love fall in the mountains and in the countryside, and, like you, once we get to -20 degrees and -30 degrees, my opinion changes somewhat. 😉
Awesome place..really really nice place I wish I could bring my family and friend to Michigan.
