Miscellaneous Musings Volume II: Final Four, Babies, and More!

in Commentary, Life

This past weekend was a nice relaxing one for once, which means a lot of thoughts were whipping through my head.  None of these thoughts were worthy of their own post, so I thought I would just share what’s on my mind:

  1. Our family enjoys a little friendly gambling during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  We each fill out our entire bracket, kick in five bucks, and it is winner take all.  I have had some success over the years, with my biggest success being the year I picked all four Final Four teams correctly.  You could say I was an expert bracketologist that year.  However, this year, you could say I am a bracketology failure.  For the first time ever, not one of my Final Four picks actually made it to the Final Four.  (I had picked Duke, North Carolina, BYU and Kansas.)  However, nobody else’s picks in our household made it to the Final Four either!  Actually, my husband didn’t even pick a team that made it to the Elite 8.  I wonder how many other people had similar brackets?  I have been told that President Obama picked all number 1 seeds to make it to the Final Four, so you could say that I am as successful as the President!  Ha!  Our family still needs to go through all our brackets to see who the family winner is, although it isn’t as fun when everyone is eliminated so early.
  2. Will I ever not want a baby?  I love babies!  I would have had 100 of them.  I know my body is rapidly aging and it totally isn’t practical at this point in my life.  But, that doesn’t matter in my heart.  My husband and I went to Barnes and Noble on Sunday and I walked by the pregnancy books and my heart just sank.  I saw the cutest baby on the cover of a book and I just felt so sad.  I loved being pregnant, and I loved bringing the babies home from the hospital.  Will that longing ever disappear?  Will I be 80 years old and getting tears all over my trifocals when I walk through a bookstore or pass a maternity shop?  Sometimes I want to just smack myself because I have 3 absolutely wonderful kids and I am the luckiest person in the world.  Do I really want another baby, or do I just want to re-raise my current kids?  Actually, it think it might be the latter.
  3. I am SOOOOO ready for vacation, I cannot even tell you.  I will soon be on the beaches of the Gulf Coast and then hanging out at Disney.  (So, if you don’t see me around as much, just know that I am somewhere warm and probably spending too much money.)
  4. I love the Magic Bullet.  I first saw it on an infomercial, but I knew the price was a rip-off.   So, I was patient and waited until it was at Kohl’s, and I bought it with a 30 percent off coupon a couple years ago.  I use it almost every single day to make smoothies, and it has totally been worth the investment.  It has also held up really well too.  If you buy one, keep it on the counter so you think to use it.  It also comes with a recipe book, and you can use the Magic Bullet to make a variety of healthy drinks/snacks.  (I am not getting any kick-backs for recommending the Magic Bullet, I just really think it is a great little appliance.)

I better stop there since this post is starting to get long.  Do you have a thought for the day you would like to share?

Good to know about Magic Bullet! I must’ve seen that informercial a gazillion times!

And I agree, it is time for a vacation – for some reason this winter seemed loong! (I feel this way every winter!)
🙂

I love my Magic Bullet too! Yummy strawberry smoothies in 1.5 minutes or less, lol. 🙂

BFS- The Magic Bullet rocks for sure. I tried making guacamole in it though, and I wasn’t thrilled with the consistency. I probably did it wrong though!

Winter seemed long because it WAS long. I believe the high here is 40 today, but at least it is very sunny.

You gotta try the Magic Bullet!!

Funny how I’m still feeling so opposite about #2. We could trade feelings and then I could have a second kid.

Nicole- you had a tough time getting pregnant though, so your reluctance is very understandable. It can be a very difficult decision, that is for sure.

Well, our little guy is also pretty exhausting, as wonderful as he is. In a couple years he’ll be able to help.

Like Nicole, I don’t share the same feelings about being pregnant. I had really rough pregnancies both times, and when I went to visit my 3 hour old nephew this weekend, I was content just to hold him. It’s an amazing feeling holding a new baby, but I didn’t have any desire to have another child of my own. I was happy to have that done and behind me.

I could really use a few days somewhere warm.

Oh my, holding a 3 hour old baby would probably send me over the edge. I would be nagging my husband like crazy! 🙂

Tough pregnancies can definitely alter how much you want to have another I am sure. Not to mention, 9 months is a really long time.

My current random thought goes to Spring Break nearly three weeks from now. I am thinking about our trip to New Orleans. Most of my other thoughts are focused on daily tasks.

Krantcents – So your spring break correlates with Easter this year? Ours used to, but now it will always be the first week in April.

I hope you have a great time in New Orleans – I have never been there.

A few days in a totally different setting would be great right now. Just chillaxing and having the freedom to do whatever, focusing on pure fun, would be great. Those times get tougher to find as we take on increased responsibility in life. 80 degrees and sunny would be nice too.

Squirrel, I will be chillaxing very soon, and it can not come soon enough. We usually go somewhere warm in February, but as you said, it can be harder to find the time to do it as responsibilities increase. (Or you have two kids playing Varsity basketball and they aren’t allowed to leave over mid-winter break…)

I hope you can find some time soon!

My thought for today: I love sugar house! I went there this week end with family. Ham and eggs with maple syrup, and the desserts! I must have taken 10 pounds only in that day!

I didn’t believe in the Magic Bullet. Now we get me curious!

I just love kids! Would have 100 of them too!

Vacations! Nothing planned yet. Should start thinking about it!

DNW – You have to believe in the Magic Bullet, it is a wonderful thing. I was skeptical myself, but it has been fantastic. My whole family loves smoothies. The great thing is, the kids can put in whatever ingredients they want. It has been very durable as it is over 2 years old and has been used countless times.

What is Sugar House?

I will be on vacation very, very soon. I can feel the sun now…

@Kris,
I know not everyone knows what a Sugar House is. I live in Quebec, Canada. Here it is called a “Cabane à sucre”. It is some kind of a typical restaurant (usually all in wood and in the woods too) where they serve dishes with (true) maple syrup. Eggs, ham, potatoes, pea soup and lots of desserts. We put maple syrup on almost EVERYTHING. Next to the restaurant, there is usually the place where they make the maple syrup for us to visit and we can eat maple taffy. We can also take a ride in an horse-drawn carriage and walk in the woods with the kids. It is opened only for a month or two during the late winter and early spring. You have to live it once to really understand and appreciate. But then, it is addictive! It is a spring tradition for many of us.

I was very surprised when I saw that President Obama picked all 4 #1 seeds to make the Final Four. He allegedly is a big basketball fan and should know better than that. It is actually the exception for all the #1’s to make the Final Four than the rule. 🙂

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:45 am

Kaycee – I totally agree. Picking all number one seeds is so boring and isn’t fun at all!

I’m 28 and can’t even work up the want for one kid, much less one more after raising three. You have way more energy than me!

Reply

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:44 am

BFS – Not sure it is energy as much as some strange instinct…

Don’t feel to bad about your brackets. I saw on ESPN that only 1000 people out of 6 million correctly had 3 of the 4 final four teams. There’s always next year.. I’ve got Uconn winning it all.

Reply

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:42 am

Jeff- are you going to win some big money if Uconn wins?

I am surprised that 1000 people picked 3 out of 4 teams with how crazy the games were this year. It was really fun to watch VCU win on Saturday though. I think I will root for them. (Care to wager? 🙂 )

Reply

Jenna March 28, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Just that I hope UCONN takes the championship!

Reply

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:40 am

Jenna, I really don’t care who wins now that all my teams are out! Isn’t that terrible? At the beginning of the season, I was really excited for the tournament because I thought my Spartans would be going far. I was certainly wrong!

Ahhh, finally a place where we don’t think quite as similarly!

With respect to babies, my wife is the one that wants more. We only have two and I’m perfect content.

I like kids and babies, but I’m very happy with what I have 🙂

Reply

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:39 am

MR – I am happy with what I have too, but more would have been great! However, I don’t know if my love of babies will ever go away, so it is probably I did not follow my instincts or I would have 20 kids by now.

Mrs. 101 and I always pine for a little girl, we should have had or adopted one 10 years ago when we were younger and more full of vim and vigor.

Reply

Kris March 29, 2011 at 9:30 am

101- it is hard to know whether or not to have more kiddos! My third child was hell on wheels up until the age of 3. He just ran and ran, and then ran some more. I was only 30 when my youngest was born, so I could have kept on going. But, we were exhausted.

You would have probably had 10 kids, all boys….
