in Link Round Up

Can you believe it is the weekend already?  My gosh time is flying faster and faster.

Anyway, I am spending the weekend getting ready for Thanksgiving, probably like many other people across America.  This week I will be sharing some general cooking tips (Wednesday), along with a recipe for sweet potato casserole (Tuesday), that somehow manages to taste like pumpkin pie.  This recipe does not contain one marshmallow…

I have to say I am really excited for the start of the holiday season.  I just love Christmas lights, Christmas music, and snow.  Bring it on!!!

So, when you are taking a break on this fine Sunday, sit back and read some of these great links.  Read about how I am an idiot for buying HDMI cables at Best Buy and more!

Enjoy, and have a great week.

101 Centavos has some great cooking tips. He may make you rethink the use of a salad spinner, and he has me contemplating purchasing a cast iron skillet. (Gotta buy it while I am still strong enough to lift one though. Anyone have thoughts on cast-iron skillets? Yay or Nay?)

Biz of Life has a great post about the airlines ‘pat down’ practices. I love that the title is ‘The Don’t Touch My Junk Controversy’. I am a nervous flier, so junk-touching is the least of my worries. However, if it ever actually happens, I may change my mind. (Or not.. 🙂 )

Budgeting in the Fun Stuff has a great guest post on her site about hypermiling. I had heard of the term before but didn’t know what it meant. There are some great ideas in the article about how to get more miles to the gallon in your car. I break so many ‘efficiency’ rules, I think I almost need counseling to change my ways. However, I am going to try!

Car Negotiation Coach must have been in the aisle next to me at Best Buy this week as I bought the very cables that he writes NOT TO BUY from Best Buy. Can you believe his article literally was published the day AFTER I bought these darn cables??? Of course, I had already ripped open the package and used them by the time I read it, so I couldn’t return them. Argh!!!!

Crystal Clear Thoughts asks if a Blogger is considered a professional writer or not. I admit, I never really thought about it one way or another. However, I think by general rules, if you get paid for it, than you are a pro, right?

Faithful With A Few is sharing some great Black Friday deals at Walmart. He also has a separate post about CVS. I know some people will get up super early, or never go to bed, in hopes of getting the deals at Walmart. Read the post and start planning!

Free Money Finance shares why he does not think gold is a good investment. He brings up a major point that I was not aware of- you don’t always get a fair price for gold at resale. So that lump you bought that may actually be worth 1000 dollars may only fetch you 750 dollars on the open market. Anyone out there had any experience selling their gold that was bought as an investment?

Grumpy Rumblings of the Untenured share their addictions, and it reminded me of how much I like Word Whomp and Tumblebees on Pogo. I have so far resisted the urge to play since I read their post, but I am not sure how long I will last.

Financial Samurai wants to single-handledly revamp the airline industry by forming his own airline. I will say that I would prefer to fly on an FS plane instead of  Northwest. However, I do fear that ticket prices might end up a bit expensive given his plans…

Invest It Wisely wants us to challenge/reevaluate our core beliefs and see if we come up with new thoughts.  This spurred some great posts from First Gen American too, that also need to be read. I admit that when I read the posts from both Kevin and Sandy, it did make me rethink some thoughts that were solid as concrete in my head.

Len Penzo brings up some points about plastic bags and wants everyone to stop hating them. He also shares some creepy thoughts on the reusable cloth bags. (I admit, I love the ease of carrying plastic bags, but enjoy the functionality of the paper bag to put all my recycled paper in.)

Little House In The Valley shares her predictions for the housing market. My prediction is that I better stay in my current home until I am a 112 years old, as that is when it will be worth what I paid for it. (Just kidding, we are nowhere near underwater, but I do hate that our house has lost value.)

Money Reasons shares a comic written by his very talented daughter about Mr. Plate! It is very cute.

Passive Family Income shares how just paying a small amount extra on your mortgage can equal huge savings over the term of your mortgage. I personally refinanced from a 30 year to a 15 year when interest rates dropped, and the increase in my monthly payment was not much at all.

Personal Finance By The Book discusses taking a break in order to be more productive. I could not agree more with this thought. I don’t know how many times I have struggled with a problem, and an answer would come to me the minute I stopped focusing on it. All of my fantastic ideas have arrived when my brain was turned off.

Squirrelers didn’t go wild this week, but he did share a wonderful story about his daughter and his grandma. Sounds like the Squirrel is doing a great job raising his little one! You don’t see the empathy displayed by his daughter in kids very often.

Sustainable Life Blog asks if it is appropriate to use a coupon on the first date. Well, I am many years removed from a first date, but I can say that I would say ‘great, does that mean I can get dessert?’. I would have had no problem with it at all. Now, if the guy only wanted to go to a certain restaurant that I hated just because he had a coupon, then that would be a different story.

Wealth Artisan shares the story of helping someone who appeared in need, but was asking for nothing. It reminds us all of how much we have, and also how great it can feel to be there to help someone.

Wealth Informatics shares some great Black Friday shopping tips for you shoppers out there. I personally do not really shop on Black Friday, but I know that it could be considered an Olympic Sport for some.

Yes I Am Cheap brings up some great points about dollar stores. There are some warnings in there about certain items that I was not aware of.  The post also lists out some great things to purchase. Do you buy much at dollar stores?

For the first time in years I feel festive and excited about the holidays instead of overwhelmed. My 2 kids are at a great age as well to really enjoy the holiday.

I’m hoping people will post some good recipes this week. I always try to do one or two new things at the holidays to try to discover a new favorite.

I absolutely love the sweet potato casserole recipe I will be posting. I generally am not a fan of sweet potatoes either, but everyone eats this.

I also love to try new holiday recipes. I have tried to replicate the squash that my daughter loved at Bill Knapp’s. However, I continue to fail although I try each year.

That would be great. Those airplane bathrooms scare me as they exist today. Maybe a little bathroom lounge area would be nice too… 🙂

Yea on the cast iron skillet. They’re cheap and excellent for things that you take from stovetop to oven. (Like pineapple upside down cake.)

Nicole- Maybe I will get a cast iron skillet for Christmas. I have often thought about how great it would be to take a pan off the stove top and put it in the oven, but never didn’t because I didn’t think it would work out very well. Now I need the pineapple upside down cake recipe… 🙂

This weekend did fly by didn’t it!

Is it just more or does it seem like people are more festive this year? Half of my street put up their Christmas lights already! I think this is going to be a good year end 🙂

Thanks for the mention!

Hi Kris, thanks for the link. Don’t stop at a skillet, get you a dutch oven too. You’ll be baking crusty beer bread in no time at all.

I might end up getting some Christmas gifts at the 99 cent store too. It’s the thought that counts, right?

Hey Kris, I’d be really surprised if you couldn’t return those HDMI cables after they were opened. Might save ya $80 (or whatever you spent).

By the way, if you haven’t bought a TV yet to go with those cables, you might wanna check out my post today :).

And thanks for inlcuding me in your roundup!

CNC – I did buy the tv, but I did research that quite well so I am comfortable with what I paid for the tv. The stupid HDMI cables caught me off guard though. Dummy. (me)

Thanks for the mention. My junk is still safe since I haven’t flown recently. But the is looking more and more attractive for travel.

Thanks for posting my Black Friday link, Kris! Since we’ll be at home relaxing on Black Friday, we hope to catch all the drugstore deals on Thursday! I posted them all on my black Friday page. Are you going to go to CVS on Thursday?

Kris November 23, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Khaleef- I will probably be a little busy with the family on Thursday, I will have to see if I can fit it in!!
