Keeping Things In Perspective…

My HP Pavilion laptop broke down over the weekend.  It was all of 18 months old, and I guess it just couldn’t take it anymore.  I would turn it on, and it would turn itself off.  Great feature, if you like knowing you threw a bunch of money down the drain.  I ran my laptop to the Geek Squad at Best Buy and they said it was a problem with the motherboard, which apparently is quite expensive.  Five-hundred-dollars expensive.  I was furious.  I spent a lot of money on this laptop when I bought it- it was definitely not some cheap model.  Of couse it was out of warranty, and I hadn’t bought any extended plan.  So, I paid for the Geek Squad to back up my data from my old laptop and proceeded over to the laptop section of the store to see if they had any deals.   In the end, I bought a Sony Vaio, and vowed to never, ever invest in another HP product.  (I believe the guy at Geek Squad said I unfortunately must have bought a lemon.  Sweet.)

Anyway, as much as I didn’t want to spend the money on a laptop, at least I had the money, and it wasn’t a catastrophe.  It got me thinking about how much I do stress about money, and about how everything is relative.  So often we are always reaching for the next level.  Reaching and worrying about paying the car or mortgage off early, or whatever.  I am not saying it isn’t good to have goals, but it can be detrimental if it affects your mood and enjoyment of life.   Due to some hard work and some luck, our family has been fortunate.  No, we don’t have a summer home, expensive clothes, or fancy cars.  But our house is not underwater and we can pay for things if they break down without suffering too much hardship (thus far).  Compared to so many others, we flat out have it made.

So, instead of sitting around angry about the extra expense I went through to replace the laptop, I am focusing  instead on how lucky we are.  Lucky that my husband is gainfully employed, lucky we live in a safe neighborhood, and more.  Not to mention, this laptop works a million times better than the laptop that just broke down, and I don’t have to use Vista anymore.  It is all good!

While it is awful that your computer broke down, great job on looking at the bright side. It is important to count the blessings in the face of problems. That is one of my favorite things about my wife is that she can always find the good when we’re in the trenches.

Good luck with the new computer and we hope it serves you well!

Five hundred dollars expensive? I bought my Dell for that much 3 years ago, and it’s still going strong. I can’t game on it, but I have a desktop for that. The only real downside is that the battery is almost dead, so it’s not much use for travel!

Kevin@InvestItWisely June 30, 2010 at 7:33 pm

P.S. Just wanted to add you’re not the only one that’s had trouble with HP 😉

I commend you for being able to look on the bright side of things! I would be more than a little miffed if that happened to me.

Kris June 30, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Kevin – How long did your HP last?

I think part of the reason I am taking it in stride is because I love this Sony Vaio. It types so much nicer and is much faster. I am miffed at HP, don’t get me wrong. But, I am also grateful that I could afford a resolution.

Great post! It’s very easy to sit back and see the negative in every situation. But, like you said, you have a lot to be grateful for, and you were in a great situation to absorb this.

Like you, I recently had to replace my HP laptop and chose a Sony Vaio.

Khaleef – Don’t you love the Sony Vaio compared to that HP? How long did your HP last?

Good to hear that you took the loss in stride! Just for the record I’m upset for you!!! A laptop should last longer that 18 months!!! I have ones that are 5 years old now…

If I were you, I would take the laptop apart re-seating everything! Sometimes that makes a difference. My sister gave me her Dell that had a similar problem. After doing the typical and getting nowhere, I stripped it down and started selling the parts on ebay. I was only then that I got to the CPU and the seating of it in the CPU socket that I found the problem. Apparently my sister dropped it and it popped out for a little (just enough). I re-seated it, but I had already sold most of it (the screen, memory, keyboard pad, etc). So that was my lesson learned.

If you can’t fix it by reseating it, you can always strip the parts and sell them on ebay!

I know what you mean though, things like this isn’t as big for me as it use to be either 🙂 Life is good!

Money Reasons – if I took apart the computer, it would probably find a way to explode or something. If I were more technical, I would try it, but I don’t think I would have much success. I can write a mean computer program, but can’t deal with hardware. Can I ship it to you? 🙂

Money Reasons July 1, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Hehe, Laptops aren’t so bad really, no loose wires, just boards of some type that mainly fix in slots in the laptop…

I would hope that the geek squad tried reseating everything. If not, then shame on them!

Kris July 1, 2010 at 7:17 pm

MR, I think the geek squad is now just going to back up my data, now that I have my new best friend, the Sony Vaio. The geek squad ‘helper’ was actually pretty much a jerk. I will be writing about him another day.
