Everyone loves the great feeling of completing a really good workout. Lots of sweat, lots of calories burned, clear mind, etc. The other side of a strenuous workout can be a real bummer – crashing.
The reason your body can crash after an intense work out is the glycogen in your body gets depleted. Glycogen is what muscles use for energy, and when the body is low on glycogen, the result can be fatigue and exhaustion. This is especially true for high endurance activities like long distance running, swimming, and biking.
One way to avoid that crashing feeling is to have some chocolate milk after exercise. Numerous studies have shown that chocolate milk has just the right ratio of carbohydrates to protein to help muscles recover from strenuous exercise. The result is less fatigue and less muscle pain. Chocolate milk is also great recovery drink for those teenage athletes out there that generally don’t get enough calcium in their diet in the first place.
However, this does not give the casual exerciser permission to stroll for a couple miles and come home and rip open that carton of chocolate milk. The intent of chocolate milk is to restore glycogen stores. Since mild exercise does not cause glycogen depletion, a recovery drink is not necessary. If you start drinking chocolate milk every time you do some mild exercise, you might just find yourself putting on some weight.
The bottom line is, you really don’t need super sports drinks to help your body recover from that workout. Chocolate milk does the job just as well, and at a lower cost. Not to mention milk also has a good dose of Vitamin D and Potassium too.
