A Night At The Movies – A Variety of Thoughts

Saturday night, my family of 5 went to go see Toy Story 3, in 3D, and IMAX.

First, let me say the tickets alone cost $63. (I even said my daughter was 12 and under even though she is 14.   I know, not the most ethical.  But those tickets were so expensive – I was desperate!)  We brought along our own secret water bottles and had just eaten dinner, so no snacks/drinks were necessary.  However, I will say that parting with that $63 was difficult for 2 hours of amusement.  Actually, not even 2 hours.  More like 90 minutes of amusement and 30 minutes of obnoxious previews and a Disney ‘short’  film.

Second, let me say, I am not a fan of 3D, and I don’t know why every ‘kids’ movie is now being released in 3D.  My head was pounding 30 minutes after wearing those giant glasses.  I can’t imagine how uncomfortable it must be for people that already wear glasses.   I can understand 3D for certain action movies, but Toy Story?  Totally unnecessary.   (As a side note, I saw a 3D television at the Sony store the other day, and there is no way I would allow that tv set into my house.)

Third, I found Toy Story 3 to be heart-wrenching.  I won’t go into detail as I don’t want to ruin the movie for those who have not seen it.  However, I believe most people already know that the premise of the movie is that Andy is going off to college.   The movie did a very good job at pulling the heart strings and really capturing the emotions of a child growing up.   I will say though that there is a scene where the toys are in danger that I think Pixar took it too far, and it could be quite upsetting to younger kids.  Even I was thinking ‘enough already!’.

In the end, I was still glad we went to the movie, even though I ended up with a raging headache, my husband’s wallet was lighter, and my face was stained with tears.  I still had a nice time, and it gave all of my kids a little something to think about.  Hopefully kids everywhere will get the message that they need to appreciate what is left of their childhood, instead of being in a rush to grow up.

I’m not a fan of 3D either. It’s better than it was in the past with the blue and the red lens. Now it just disorients me a bit after the movie is over, and makes my eyes tear a bit.

It’s good to hear that Toy Story 3 was such a good movie! I’ll make sure to take the kids to see it (I hope it comes to our drive-in!).

Money Reasons – Toy Story 3 was a good movie. Even all the teenagers I know that saw it really enjoyed it. Little ones may be kinda scared during one part in the movie actually. But, it was very good. I still feel a little sad when I think about it…

I have to say, at $63 for 5 people you got a bargain compared to me! Well, maybe just a little better deal:) I paid over $30 for 2 (my daughter and I) to see the recent Shrek release in IMAX 3-D. The way I look at, she had fun and we made memories – I hope, anyway!

I do like the IMAX viewing experience in 3-D. I have been to a few IMAX films in the past, but 3-D was interesting.

Squirreler – I think our adult tickets were 14 each, so I had 3 adult and 2 kids. I guess the kids were 10.50. So yes, I did get a deal.

There is always a silver lining!

Was the Shrek movie worthwhile in 3D?

I’m not a huge fan of the 3D either but I have a lot of gripes about the movie theater. So much so, that my wife and I have stopped going:

1.) They’ve become far too expensive!
a.) I don’t care how much the 3D projector cost
b.) I’m fine with film if it cuts the ticket price in 1/2.
c.) The Major theaters around us got rid of student pricing! (ARGH!)

2.) Concessions are too expensive.
a.) My wife and I now sneak candy or soda in the purse.
b.) We don’t consider it unethical because the theater is abusing their pseudo-monopoly by charging outrageous prices.

3.) People are extremely rude at the theaters.
a.) We’re a fairly young couple, but we can’t stand the teens! They are always playing with the cell phones and running in and out (what’s the point of paying for the tickets?).
b.) We have state troopers out there every weekend, just to have their presence their (that means that things are terribly wrong).

Those are my gripes about the movie theaters.

Thanks,

My daughter and I were totally tearing up during the movie. We just saw it in regular screen. We always sneak in drinks, hot dogs and candy. Wow, $63? Movies are SO dang expensive!

I really did enjoy Avatar in 3D. it totally gave the movie an increased element. Other than that… I will stick with the old school way. 😉

Money Funk – I cried my eyes out, but I am a sap. You actually sneak hot dogs into the movie? Or, are you saying you eat them at the movie? I have a big purse, but not that big! 🙂

I can totally see action movies being in 3D. Just didn’t see the purpose in Toy Story being 3D.
